Who are The Renters?
I had the pleasure of interviewing The Renters the other week, a local San Diego band based in Oceanside, CA. The Renters are known in the local scene as a fun, upbeat, surf/indie rock band with a huge dedication to their local community. What is each members name and what do they play?
The Renters consists of four members. Johnny (vox and guitar), Seth (guitar), Tyler (bass), and Hunter (Drums).
How did the band start? Any funny stories about the start of The Renters?
“We started playing in 2018 in the Inland Empire! We all learned how to play our instruments together, none of us had much experience. All of our first shows were pretty funny because we weren’t very good (lol).”
What is your favorite part about being in a band?
“Getting to write music with my closest friends. Relating to people in such a therapeutic way is very special to me.”
Houseshows: Tell me about the houseshows that you guys set up. What inspired you to start throwing your own shows?
“We are all huge fans of the DIY scene, so when we first started we naturally gravitated towards throwing our own events! We got our first houseshow together in 2019 and haven’t looked back. To any bands looking to do the same, be prepared to sacrifice a lot and make sure the space is safe and stands for a good cause.”

Lets take a moment to focus on your most recent release. How did you like doing a live session with Eastlake Studios?
“Eastlake was a lot of fun! It was a very spontaneous session for us. We kind of just threw the structure of it together last minute but it was super fun to collaborate with them on the fly like that!”
Do you think that for the most part, the music scene in San Diego does a good job at supporting local artists?
“I think the scene is extremally supportive. We are not from the area so to be embraced by the people here was a huge miracle for us considering our hometown never really caught on.”
Any advice for people looking to start a band? Or any advice you wish you could give to your younger self?
“Best advice would be to get as many hours possible behind your instrument or even multiple instruments if you can! Don’t be afraid to work hard and support the community around you. Have a good time and enjoy your youth.”
