Introducing the High Sticks: The Band Behind the San Diego Seals’ New Theme Song
The energy was electric as over 2,000 fans caught the live debut of a song destined to become an anthem. The High Sticks, a fresh force on the music scene, are making waves with their latest project: the official theme song for the San Diego Seals. Dropped on November 1st, this track took center stage during a special halftime performance on December 13th at Pechanga Arena, during the Seals’ home game.
Featuring Tyler on bass, Luis as the lead vocalist, Robert on guitar, and Matt Bennet on drums, the band brings together a powerhouse of talent to deliver a dynamic and unforgettable sound. With their mix of a passion for music and a love for live sports, the High Sticks are carving out a unique space in both the music and lacrosse worlds. They sat down with me to share the inspiration behind their name, the creation of their theme song, and what’s next for this exciting new band. Let’s dive in!
THE NAME OF THE GAME
Every great band has a story behind their name, and the High Sticks are no exception. "The name High Sticks comes from a penalty in lacrosse," the band explains. "It’s when a player uses their stick to hit another player above the shoulder." This nod to the sport ties their identity closely to the San Diego Seals, reflecting their connection to the team they now represent.
The Formation of the High Sticks
So, how did the High Sticks come together? "The band formed when I reached out to the songwriter about the idea I had for a song about the Seals," one member shared. "His credits included being featured on Loudspeaker (91X) and SoundDiego (NBC). The other members are teachers at School of Rock San Diego." This blend of experienced songwriters and talented educators created the perfect lineup for this unique project.
The Song That Sealed the Deal
The San Diego Seals' new theme song came to life through collaboration and a deep dive into the sport of lacrosse. "The songwriter, James, was incredible to work with," the band recalls. "Very responsive and enthusiastic about the project. He has his home studio in Calexico. I sent him info on the team, and he studied up about the sport of lacrosse."
When the band heard the first draft of the song, they knew they had something special. "After the songwriter sent back the first and only version of the song, I knew right away it would be a hit," they said. The track made its way up the Seals' organizational ladder—from the social media team to the Vice President—until it was decided the band would debut the song live at the season opener.
A Punk Rock Writing Process
Creating a song for a lacrosse team came with a clear vision. "The process was to do a song in the style of Blink-182 since lacrosse is the most punk rock sport ever. With fights, running, and checking—which is basically moshing." This high-energy approach ensures the song resonates with fans on and off the field.
Live Performances and Future Plans
Fans had their first chance to hear the song live during the halftime show of the Seals' Emo theme night on December 13th. But that’s not all the High Sticks have in store. "The future of the High Sticks is that we will become the house band for the Seals during home games," they revealed, solidifying their place as a key part of the team’s culture.
Beyond the High Sticks
In addition to his role in the band, one member is making waves in his solo career as DJ Bassassin. "My next gig is at the Cheba Hut in San Diego on January 10th," he shared, hinting at even more exciting music projects on the horizon.
With their passion for music and sports, the High Sticks are carving out a unique space in the world of lacrosse and punk rock. Keep an eye—and an ear—out for their next big move.
