Meet the band Jewelry Girl from Chula Vista, California! Jewelry Girl describes itself as a high-energy rock band, leaning more towards the garage rock genre that has recently been in popularity again over the past decade. Jewelry Girl is a two-piece band comprising Jonlukas on guitar and vocals and Emi on drums. Let's see what the band has to say about the local San Diego music scene, the start of their band, and what they have in store for the future!

HOW AND WHEN DID THE BAND FORM?

"The band formed freshman year of high school. It was just me and Emi. I knew he played drums, so I asked him if he wanted to jam to some Nirvana songs. Then we played on and off until it got serious. 'Debaucher' was the first original song we wrote (2018). It kept us together and has been gaining us steady traction ever since. Our original bassist produced and uploaded it. He is no longer with us, but we still love him and wish him all the best. Shoutout to Donggeon Kwak, ily bro."

TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE NAME "JEWELRY GIRL."

"I came up with so many names, and that was the only one that didn't sound terrible. I wish I had a better answer for this, but I was 17. I just thought it sounded cool at the time. There are so many bands now with 'girl' in their name; it's definitely overdone at this point. It's kind of like how a lot of bands start with 'beach.' Shoutout to Beach Fossils, though. I don't hate the name, but we're stuck with it, lol."

TELL ME ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE IN THE SAN DIEGO MUSIC SCENE. IS THE MUSIC SCENE HERE EXCELLING OR LACKING MORE SO THAN OTHER MUSIC SCENES?

"I don't have a real good answer for this, but Emi wants to give a shoutout to all the people who help keep his drum kit together during our sets; they know who they are. God bless you all!!"

WHAT OTHER MUSICAL ACTS INSPIRE THE TYPE OF MUSIC YOU MAKE?

"When we were younger starting out, Nirvana was obviously a big influence, same with The Strokes. We were definitely 'artsy' kids then; we listened to Mac Demarco and Odd Future. Now, we kinda just take inspiration from anything. We like EDM music a lot, and we try to incorporate those dynamics into our sound. We just like it when songs drive. Disco beats, we love that sh*t."

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE/MOST MEMORABLE SHOW MEMORY?

"Favorite show memory was a packed SDSU house show; it was the perfect setting. The cops came during the 'Debaucher' breakdown. The guy hosting told us we had to stop, but how could we? As he walked away, we jumped right back into the outro, and everyone went fucking nuts. Definitely felt like something out of a movie. I hate saying that, but it's so true. He came up to us afterward like, 'not cool bro,' but that was definitely the coolest shit we ever did."

LET'S TALK ABOUT YOUR MOST RECENT RELEASE, "SO YOU WANNA BE A ROCKSTAR?" WHICH CAME ON APRIL 1ST, 2023. WHAT WAS THE RECORDING PROCESS LIKE FOR THIS ALBUM? HOW LONG DID IT TAKE TO RECORD?

"The recording process was hard. just cause we had never really taken it seriously. We had the drums recorded, and I didn't track guitars til' like a year after. I tracked guitars with a practice amp in my bedroom same with vocals. I wish I would've taken more time with that record. I was just frustrated and wanted to be done with it. A lot of those songs we wrote when we were teenagers, so we've definitely outgrown them. I wanted to preserve the memory of the band in its infancy. It definitely sounds like that, like a band starting out. I wouldn't have it any other way, though. But to answer your question, it took us like 2ish years to record."

IS THERE AN OVERALL THEME/MESSAGE FOR THIS ALBUM? OR DOES IT CONSIST OF MANY DIFFERENT THEMES/MESSAGES?

"I like to think it starts out at a party with some shit going down and what happens throughout the night. So, it is a loose concept record, but not on purpose. Completely accidental. There's no overall theme or message. It's just kinda about being young and dumb. Being naive, saying stupid shit, doing dumb stuff. I know everyone can relate to that."

WHAT SONG IS THE EASIEST SONG TO RECORD? WHAT WAS THE HARDEST?

"All the songs have different things that made them a challenge to record. I would say maybe 'Wish U Knew Tht' was the easiest, just cause it's power chords the whole time, same with 'Jackie Song.' The hardest song was 'blow ur mind.' I couldn't tell you why; I just remember having a hard time with it. Emi says 'Coming Down' was easy and 'blow ur mind' was hard."

IF YOU HAD TO CHOOSE, WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SONG ON THE ALBUM?

Jonlukas states, "My favorite song would probably have to be 'blow ur mind' or 'Debaucher' just cause I feel the most proud of these."

Emi states that "Jackie Song" is their favorite off of the album.
