Meet Daddy: New Single “Someone Else”

Meet the indie/alternative band Daddy, located in San Diego, California! Daddy consists of four members. We have Brooke Patterson, the lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist, Jessica Taylor on bass, Franky Arambula on lead guitar and backup vocals, and Jack Mcain as the drummer and additional backup vocalist. On August 18th of, 2023, at midnight, Daddy released their newest single, "Someone Else," which is now out on all listening platforms! So, without further ado, let's hear what Daddy has to say about their most recent release, what they have in store for the future, and much more!

TELL ME, WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE THE NAME "DADDY" FOR YOUR MUSICAL PROJECT?
"I don't remember how the exact conversation went with Jess and me, but it was originally suggested as a joke. Something along the lines of, 'What if we had a band named Daddy so everyone would be forced to call us that when we perform' and then we were like, 'Haha… wait..?' So we went to an open mic and tested out by introducing the two of us as Daddy–it caught people off guard and ended up just sticking. Plus, I think it fits us because it's partially campy and unserious but also partially subversive and ironic since we're a female-fronted, super queer band."

HOW AND WHEN DID DADDY FORM? WERE THERE ANY CHALLENGES IN GETTING THE BAND TOGETHER?
"Jess and I started this project last summer in her living room–just about a year ago (happy birthday to us)! Jess and I actually went to high school together, I was a theatre kid, and she played in the orchestra pit. We definitely knew each other, but we weren't really friends at that point. We ended up connecting as adults and started hanging out last summer– neither of us had played music for a while, but we started jamming in her apartment for fun and ended up arranging this slowed-down cover of 'Jolene' together that I had floating around in my head for a while. Afterward, we were like, 'Oh, that was really fun. We should just keep doing this constantly.' And then we did, and that was the birth of Daddy."
"A few months in, we met Franky at an open mic– we saw him play this really cool instrumental set with a loop pedal, and after a couple of songs, I leaned over to Jess and was like, 'He needs to join our band.' We had him come over to the apartment and play some of our songs with us, and he very quickly became a core Daddy."
"Then, a couple of months after that, we found Jack through a Craigslist ad. For a while, we were having a hard time finding a consistent drummer, and out of desperation, I had put up a Craigslist ad that said something along the lines of 'If you're gay and play the drums, DM us.' Jack was literally the only person that responded. We ended up needing someone to fill in SUPER last minute for a gig, so I reached back out to him; he just casually stepped in and crushed it, and he's been with us ever since!"
"We've honestly been so lucky with our lineup and haven't run into a ton of trouble…once we had a consistent drummer, everything sorta settled into place. It's kind of amazing how quickly each of the band members became integral to our sound and identity. Everyone truly brings their own vibe and creativity to the project, and I can't fathom what the band would be like without each member."
ANY ADVICE FOR OTHER LOCAL MUSICIANS LOOKING TO START A BAND?
"This is the first band I've ever been in, so I don't really have any idea what I'm doing 75% of the time– BUT what I will say is the most helpful and rewarding thing about this past year has been meeting other musicians and getting plugged into the community here; the music scene in San Diego (from what I've experienced) has been really supportive and fun, and there are a lot of kind people who have given us the space to perform when we were just starting out. We quite literally knew no musicians in San Diego before starting Daddy, so we're extremely grateful for those who supported us early on."
"So, as far as advice, I would just say go to shows and be around other musicians as much as you can. That's been huge for us, at least!"

LET'S TALK ABOUT YOUR MOST RECENT RELEASE, THE SINGLE "SOMEONE ELSE," WHICH IS CAME OUT AUGUST 18TH AT MIDNIGHT. WHAT WAS THE RECORDING PROCESS LIKE FOR THIS SONG?
"Oh MAN, this recording process was a journey, to say the least… we've been trying to get this song (or any song for that matter) recorded since December 2022, but we just kept running into obstacles that delayed it more and more. So finally, getting to the finish line and getting our first release out in the world feels incredible."
"Some of the others in the band are more familiar, but for me, recording was an entirely new experience. So it was a little overwhelming, but I feel like we learned a sh** ton about lots of stuff."
"Jess and I got to be really heavily involved in the mixing of the song, which is great because we are super picky about what we want but can also have a hard time communicating those things not in person. Luckily we had an incredible engineer/producer who got our vision and absolutely nailed it (shoutout to Cesar Felix. We <3 you)."
WHEN WAS THE SONG ORIGINALLY WRITTEN? HOW LONG DID IT TAKE FOR THIS SONG TO COME TO LIFE TRULY?
"Fun fact: this is the first original Daddy song ever written! Technically this song was sort of Frankensteined together over the course of 5 or 6 years. I wrote the pre-chorus to the song when I was 19 and living at home and buried it in my voice memos, but I actually finished the first version of this song during quarantine–I think early 2021? I recorded myself playing the first minute and a half of it on acoustic guitar. I posted it on my personal Instagram to try and get over my fear of sharing original music with people. Since then, it's evolved a lot, though."
"I showed the song to Jess right when we started the project and was like, 'Hey, I wrote this on an acoustic guitar, but it needs to be a totally different genre and have a full band.' So we ended up rearranging it and adding more dynamics and rhythmic elements to make it more exciting for us to play. That's when the song really started to come to life for the first time."

WHAT IS THE OVERALL MESSAGE YOU ARE TRYING TO GET ACROSS WITH "SOMEONE ELSE"?
"This was one of the songs I had ever fully written from start to finish, so I didn't really go into it with a specific intention or angle. When I wrote the first version, it just came from a place of me having insanely deep-rooted feelings of stagnancy and frustration within a relationship. This song was an outlet for these thoughts and feelings when I couldn't express them in my everyday life. It very much felt like a confessional, so much so that I didn't share the song with anyone for a long time because it felt a little too honest, haha."
"To me, 'Someone Else' is definitely not a love song, but it's not quite a breakup song. I think it lives in that weird liminal space of a relationship that's already unraveled and died, but no one is ready to admit it yet– being so desperate to want something that you just simply don't want. I imagine a lot of people have experienced this in some form or another, so I guess the message it's trying to get across is just, 'Hey, I feel ya,' to those people.
