Top 10 Local Bands to Check out in the San Diego Scene

2023 was an excellent year for the local scene, with many emerging artists, addicting new releases, and successful shows. 2023 was also the year I truly dived into the music scene of San Diego, and based on my experiences, I want to share with you the bands with my favorite and most memorable performances.

1. Bleacher Creatures

First on the list, Bleacher Creatures’ live performance was characterized by electrifying vocals and a unique sound unlike any other. I’ve only seen them live once, but I’ve been looking out for their scheduled performances ever since. My recommendation from their discography would be “Hurts Me Too,” portrayed with Vic’s powerful vocals and a captivating guitar riff.

2. Messy Hera

Self-described as straight edge punk, female-fronted Messy Hera has spent this past year producing dynamic music, releasing a striking single, “Leave Me Alone,” then followed by a solid EP, “Crash and Learn.” Off their latest EP, I suggest checking out “F*** You Flaker,” a lively song with intense drumming and an unforgettable melody.

3. Immoral Remedies

Next, I’d like to introduce you to the up-and-coming death metal band Immoral Remedies. Unlike the bands mentioned above, their music is not yet available on Spotify, which is all the more reason to check out their next live show. However, you can find their released demo on Bandcamp. Comprised of only three songs, I recommend the fast-tempo banger “Bathe You In Acid.”

4. Gingsu

Since forming the band in 2020, Gingsu has cultivated a loyal following I’d like to help expand. Self-described as Alt-Metal, Gingsu’s music can be characterized by Quin’s vigorous vocal performance in front of a catchy and lively instrumental. My favorite recently is their latest release, “T.R.E.,” a powerful and intense track.

5. Migraine

With a distinct sound, garage punk band Migraine has definitely left their mark on the San Diego scene. Their music has an overall chill and calming vibe, powerful vocals, and a fast-tempo instrumental. Of their discography, I recommend their newest release, entitled “Fish.”

6. Pulse

As a band I saw once several months ago and still think about frequently, I can say Pulse’s performance was unforgettable. They played at The Che Cafe, and the audience was lively throughout their energetic set, a clear sign of their excitability. Unfortunately, Pulse doesn’t seem to have any music available online, so watch out for their next live show!

7. Dead Rosetta

As one of my local favorites, Dead Rosetta is very active in the scene, playing many shows I had the pleasure of attending. With high-powered vocals and intense instrumentals, the pit is always energetic and extremely fun. My favorite song of theirs is “Hide,” with a dark and powerful vibe.

8. Erratic Impulse

Erratic Impulse, a band that seems to play in every show I go to, has been releasing music since 2020. In listening to their extensive and solid discography, there is no dull moment to be found. My song recommendation is a fan favorite to see live with its high-energy beat, “Where’s My Lighter?” Also, if you’re attending one of their shows for the first time, be prepared for their moshpit specialty, the Wall of Death.

9. Doll Riot

Yet another band formed during the infamous year of quarantine is the all-girl garage band Doll Riot. One thing I’ve noticed that sets them apart from most others is the fan interaction during performances. There is no greater experience in the scene than the lead singer sharing the mic during your favorite song. Speaking of which, I suggest checking out their feminist anthem, “Mrreowrr.”

10. SHØWGUN

Finally, I’d like to introduce you to SHØWGUN, an Alternative band originating from Temecula. Their first performance at The Che Cafe was remarkable, with a strong stage presence accompanied by powerful vocals and unforgettable guitar riffs. As they are a band with a solid discography, you will enjoy any song of theirs you listen to, though my personal favorite is “Playing With Fire.”

Overall, this past year has been great for the San Diego music scene. Regardless of what genre you prefer, the talent and skill of these bands are undeniable. This new year, I hope to see these artists thrive more and receive much-deserved recognition for their music. Keep supporting and promoting local bands. Let’s make 2024 even greater and more successful.
