‘Wish You Were Mine’ tells the story of a forbidden longing and unobtainable infatuation. It begins soft and transitions gradually to swelling that resembles a histrionic fit of passion and candid lyrical expression. Different instrumentations that highlight their voice, featuring drum lines by Jack McCain, will make you want to throw things against walls but in a good way. Emotive bass lines, by Jess Taylor, drive the melody paired with Brook Patterson vocals. ‘Wish You Were Mine’ embodies the essence of following desire on its path that leads straight off a cliff, while on the impending fall.

Daddy is a female-fronted indie rock trio developed in the San Diego music scene in 2023. Their debut single ‘Someone Else,’ was released in August of that same year. Comprising Brooke Patterson (vocals, guitar), Jess Taylor (bass), and Jack McCain (drums), the band has quickly garnered a dedicated following for their experiential, themed live shows and uniquely captivating songwriting. This marks the second installment of the upcoming debut EP, which is expected to be fully released by the end of 2024.

WHAT WAS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF RECORDING/RELEASING THIS SONG?

Brooke: “I would say the biggest artistic challenge in making this track was finding the right dynamic balance between the softer elements of the song as well as the heavier moments. The biggest technical challenge to overcome was the fact that our producer lives on the opposite coast, so we spent some time navigating how to best collaborate remotely, which was new to both of us. Our producer (Collin McClutchy) did an exceptionally amazing job at capturing our vision and sound despite the fact we’ve never been in the same room together.”

Jess: “The most challenging part of the recording and production process for me was trying to capture the energy from how we played the song live and translate it into a produced track. We explored more experimental vocal and instrumental effects than we have in our previously recorded songs, and I think it added the vibrancy and spark that we were envisioning. “

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT THE RECORDING PROCESS?

Brooke: “During the recording of this song specifically, I started to realize how much I love writing and recording backup vocals and harmonies. Plus, Collin loves to cook on some trippy vocal effects so I always get very excited to hear what he does with the backup vocals we send him.”

Jess: “For this song, our drummer, Jack, and I recorded in the same room together. We’ve previously recorded individually, but being able to collaborate with him while recording really brought the rhythm section to life. I also loved working with Collin, who from 3,000 miles away made this one of the best experiences I’ve had in the studio.”

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE LYRICS FORM THIS NEW RELEASE?

Brooke:  “Lyrically, I think the bridge might be my favorite section: ‘And I imagine what I don't know, and the stories you tell when you're not at home. Now I'm so high and I'm so alone and I can't change the way that you feel.’ I feel like as a writer and a listener I usually resonate the most with the bridge of songs because they tend to just get right to the meat of what the song is about. For me, this song feels like it’s driven by a sense of helplessness and lack of control, and those lyrics just put it out there plainly.”

Jess: “Brooke’s answer definitely summed it up. My favorite lyric is also ‘Now I’m so high and I’m so alone,’ which I think really digs into the core of the song.”
