An Interview with Blossom: Heavily Mellow

I had the pleasure of interviewing local band Blossom the other day. See what front-man Mateo has to say about being in a band that is heavily mellow.

MEMBERS NAMES AND WHAT EACH PERSON PLAYS

Blossom is a 4-peice band featuring members Mateo (Guitar & Vox), Reuben (Drums), Ronnie (Bass), and Love (Guitar).

HOW DID THE BAND START?

“I was starting to get serious about starting a band around August 2021 when I was an incoming freshman and around that time I met some friends and started the band. Since then blossom has had a few line-up changes, but the current line up has been the same since April of last year and then we added our second guitarist (Love) in July. “

WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR INSPIRATION FROM? WHAT BANDS DO YOU LOOK UP TO THAT HAVE HELPED YOU CREATE SUCH A UNIQUE SOUND?

“A lot of our inspiration comes from bands like Whirr, My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Nothing, Smashing Pumpkins, and also a lot of our friend’s bands motivate us. I look up a lot to my Uncle Cesar. He’s always been a big piece of my life and has always inspired me to think outside of the space that is already filled. I also look up to my friends and their bands which have supported me and helped me gain new opportunities that I otherwise would have not been able to so soon.”

LETS TALK ABOUT YOUR MOST RECENT RELEASE, “FORLON”. WHAT WAS THE RECORDING PROCESS LIKE? WHAT IS THE SONG ABOUT? WHAT TYPE OF STATMENT (IF ANY) ARE YOU TRYING TO MAKE WITH THIS RELEASE?

“Oh yes, that song was written In July 2022. We're all really proud of this song because it’s our most collaborative song with not just everyone in the band but from our other friends. Forlorn is about being stuck in a feeling where nothing seems to be changing and only progressing to be worse as time goes on because of how much time has passed without someone. Our friend, Erick, who is in a band called Hex, an amazing Dream-Pop/Shoegaze band from San Diego, helped us record ‘Forlorn’ and he made the recording process into a very welcoming environment that allowed us to create this sick song.”

YOU GUYS HAVE SOME CRAZY-SOUNDING GUITAR TONES. FOR THE MUSIC NERDS- WHAT GEAR DO YOU USE? ANY GEAR YOU WOULD RECOMMEND?

“I definitely recommend having a tuner. Always gotta be in tune. Always. And for those music nerds, come to a show and figure it out. You’ll also gain an experience you won’t feel again.”

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE PART ABOUT BEING IN A BAND?

“My favorite part is probably being able to create an experience no other band can make because we do it the way we want to do it. Also, meeting new people at shows and in other bands. “

WHAT CAN LISTENERS EXPECT FROM YOU GUYS IN THE FUTURE?

“We definitely got a lot of things planned for everyone to hear about (soon) and got sick shows coming up that we’re stoked to be on and are excited for people to see.”
