An Interview With Drug Hunt: Through The Night
Drug Hunt is an indie/alternative band with some psychedelic elements from San Diego, California. In this interview, we will be talking with Jason, one of the members of the Drug Hunt, about their newest single, "Through the Night," which came out on February 15th of, 2023. Let's get into it.
TELL ME ABOUT THE PROCESS OF MAKING THIS SINGLE - WHAT WAS THE MOST EXCITING ELEMENT OF RECORDING THIS PROJECT? WHAT WAS THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE?
"The most exciting part of the recording process will always be hearing the finished product. I have tried to learn to appreciate the recording process, but it can be tedious and time-consuming. By the time you have reached the end, you have listened to the track countless times. I always say that if you don't completely hate hearing the track by the end, you haven't worked on it hard enough."
IS THERE A THEME OR CONCEPT BEHIND THIS SINGLE THAT YOU CAN SHARE?
"The song, to me, is about a process of movement through time. In the beginning, you are stuck in the dark alleyways of the city moving slowly through them. But, by the end, you have returned to nature, and things move more naturally and quickly like a stream through a canyon."
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN WRITING/RECORDING THIS PROJECT?
“This song was written sometime around the end of 2018 and the beginning of 2019. This song was part of an entire album we planned to record in April 2020. Needless to say, there were some things happening around the world at that time that prevented us from recording. So it felt terrific to get in the studio last year and finish this song."
WHAT IS IT LIKE RELEASING MUSIC AS AN INDEPENDENT ARTIST? WHAT ABOUT THE PROCESS OF RELEASING IS EXCITING? WHAT IS CHALLENGING?
"I think the hardest part will always be the amount of time it takes to actually complete a recording project. It always takes longer than you think. Ultimately, I think it's important not to get discouraged and to keep chipping away. Eventually, you will end up with a finished product that hopefully sounds good!"
WHAT’S THE PLAN POST-RELEASE - WILL YOU TRY AND TOUR THIS SUMMER? ARE YOU PLANNING ANYMORE SHOWS? RECORDING AGAIN SOON? WHAT’S NEXT?
"We have another single and a video coming out next month. And we have been working on writing and finishing more material that will eventually become the next album. We will need to get back into the studio soon, and we have plans to play more shows this spring and summer."
IF YOU COULD PUSH JUST ONE LYRIC FROM THE SINGLE WHERE PEOPLE HAD TO HEAR THE WORDS TO UNDERSTAND IT, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
"I will choose the first line in the song, 'I saw you walking through the night / Terror filled the black in your eyes.' We have all had the experience of walking on a street downtown and seeing someone who doesn't appear to be all there. It can be difficult to see, especially when you consider that person as somebody's brother, son, or uncle. The line seeks to illuminate those people's struggles and the difficulty of helping them find their way again."
