A Triumphant Return: San Diego Symphony’s Day of Music

Tune your strings and rosin up your bows, for the San Diego Symphony’s free community event, Day of Music. To celebrate the grand opening of the newly renovated Jacobs Music Center, the San Diego Symphony is hosting an open house from 11 am to 6 pm on Sunday, September 29th, which will include live performances, food, and activities.

Located in the heart of downtown, this open house is an opportunity for the general public to experience the historic concert hall for free as opposed to buying an expensive symphony ticket. While limited street parking is available, the concert hall is only a short walk from the trolley station, and centered in downtown, making it a great low-cost outing for friends or family.

Tickets are required for the event and available for free on their website on a first-come, first-served basis. The open house will feature performances by San Diego State University ensembles, Villa Musica Orchestra Neos, and the San Diego Youth Symphony, to name a few.

This event celebrates the renovation of the formerly named Copley Symphony Hall in Downtown. Originally built in 1929 and named the Fox Theatre, the 100-year-old music hall first served as a luxury movie theater before being repurposed as the official concert hall of the San Diego Symphony in 1984, when it was renamed the Copley Symphony Hall.

Now the Jacobs Music Center, the $125 million renovation took place from 2021 to 2024 in order to modernize the hall with state-of-the-art equipment and a refurbished design. Renovations included rebuilding the entire performance area from top to bottom to improve acoustics and sound quality, constructing a brand new choral terrace behind the stage, as well as several lifts, backstage multi-use spaces, upgraded lighting, and new seats.

There will be an inaugural gala at 6 pm on Saturday, September 28th, featuring guest performances by Jeff Thayer, Alisa Wellerstien, Hera Hyesang Park, and Inon Barnatan, performing pieces by Tchaikovsky, Paganini, and Rachmaninoff. Tickets for this evening's event are still available on their website.
