“Maybe” showcases a new side of Courtside Betty, giving us a delicate mix of weary optimism and undeniable vulnerability that comes with exploring new love. The track delves into the duality of hope and uncertain agitation that comes along with new romantic endeavors. Lead singer and songwriter Clay Oboth describes this track as a rare moment of buoyancy in his usually melancholic songwriting repertoire.
“I’m constantly pushing myself to try out new styles of songwriting, and this song aligns with a brief, uncharacteristic moment of optimism in my romantic life,” Oboth shares. “I typically stick to writing sad songs because I find them to be easier to connect with emotionally. I’m not necessarily always down in the dumps - I just don’t need that creative process to connect to more joyful emotions. So when I started writing a happier-sounding song, I wanted to emphasize the very real fear of vulnerability that accompanied those feelings. Turns out, in this instance, that hesitance was warranted. C’est la vie.”
The inspiration for “Maybe” came from a fleeting glimmer of hope which turned bittersweet shortly after the song’s creation. Despite the song’s upbeat sound, it retains the band’s signature realist touch, reflecting on the unpredictable nature of relationships.
With Taking Up Space slated for release next month, “Maybe” serves as a preview of what’s to come. The EP promises a blend of heartfelt lyrics and dynamic indie rock sounds.
