MEET SLEDGES: SAN DIEGO HEAVY GAZE
Meet the local San Diego band Sledges. Sledges are a heavy gaze band from Chula Vista, California. Since the rise of shoegaze, hardcore, and the subgenres from these more established genres, Sledges has grown in popularity within the local scene due to their established and new sound. Sledges is a four-piece band consisting of Philly (guitar + vocals), Alex (bass), Julian (guitar), and Mason (drums). If you are a fan of bands like Deftones, Superheaven, and Loathe, you will enjoy listening to the local San Diego band Sledges.
Let's take a look at Sledges on a deeper level and learn about how the band started, the recording process for their released songs, and much more!
WHAT INSPIRED THE NAME "SLEDGES"?
"The name Sledges isn't really inspired by anything; we just wanted a one-word band name and came across the name 'sledges' on a dictionary website and thought it looked cool, and it stuck."
HOW AND WHEN DID THE BAND FORM?
"The band formed in August 2020 with just three members: Philly, Alex, and Mason. We became a band really fast after jamming some covers and then making original music. We were a three-piece until October 2022 when Julian joined us on second guitar."
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE SONG TO PLAY LIVE?
"Our favorite song to play live is 'Headwinds.' It always has great energy and is overall really fun."
LET'S TALK ABOUT YOUR MOST RECENT RELEASE, "DISGUSTING," WHICH CAME OUT ON APRIL 24th, 2023. WHAT IS THE SONG ABOUT? WHAT WAS THE RECORDING PROCESS LIKE?
"Our most recent single, 'Disgusting,' is a reworked and re-recorded song that was previously released on our campy (demo)-EP in 2021. This new version is closer to our current sound compared to the original version, where we were still experimenting and not as refined. The new version still has the same lyrics and melodies, just different tuning, tempo, and feel. The song is about struggling with insecurities, whether it's your looks or abilities, and learning to break from them.”
“The recording process was great and we overall had lots of fun tracking it. The ‘5150 Iconic’ amp head really made that recording what it is! Mike Kamoo at Earthling Studios recorded, mixed and mastered ‘Disgusting’. We love working with Mike because he always has great input and helps us strive for the best possible recording.”

WHAT WOULD BE YOUR DREAM BAND TO TOUR WITH?
"Our dream band to tour with would probably be the band Nothing and The Smashing Pumpkins. Those two bands really inspire us, and we all love their music and songwriting."
WHAT CAN FANS EXPECT FROM YOU IN THE FUTURE?
"We are currently working on our new EP that will be coming out later this year. We are excited for everyone to hear our new songs. We will be playing more shows outside of San Diego and striving for a potential small tour."
